attentive, reflective, and honest confidant

Ezgi Todurge, Graduate Intern

Times have changed over the past 20 years, and so have our expectations from life, work, and each other. With continuously advancing technology, we gain access to a wealth of new information and endless possibilities daily, which consciously or unconsciously alter our perceived needs and wants. Before we get the chance to process our pains or achievements, the fast pace of life forces us to move on to the next ‘thing.’ Needless to say, we are overwhelmed, and anxiety begins to take over, and our day-to-day functioning, even for the simplest tasks, begins to become impaired.

I believe that regardless of one’s culture, gender, or socioeconomic stance, we all need a sense of agency, belonging, purpose, and human connection to be wholesome. Modern and future challenges become easier to overcome or withstand when these crucial necessities are met. Focusing on the unresolved conflicts from the past that continue to impact current functioning is the first step in meeting these crucial necessities of well-being.

As a first-generation Turkish-American practicum student in clinical mental health counseling, supervised by Latasha Teamer, MS, LPC-S, LMFT, I will offer you a culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, judgment-free zone where we can compassionately dive into your childhood and other past experiences that unbeknownst to you may still have a hold on your thoughts, emotions, and behavior. Together, we will explore the role culture, social norms and constructs, among other essential themes, have on your being. Such exploration will help us examine how your past has shaped your current perceptions and life choices. With collaborative efforts, our goal will be to increase your self-awareness and encourage you to live an authentic, fulfilling life with adaptive tools to help you self-regulate your thoughts, emotions, and behavior.

In addition to serving teens and adults who are grappling with stress, anxiety, depression, or have difficulties with social interactions, I am also an advocate of maternal mental health. Supporting the emotional well-being of women before and after birth has been scientifically proven to promote optimal health outcomes for both mothers and their babies. In a society where there is greater emphasis on reactive measures, I am vigilant about proactive prevention of mental health issues for future generations by offering my support to moms and moms-to-be. As a team, we have the power to prevent dysfunctional parenting styles and emotional wounds from being passed on from generation to generation.
